Patient-150

No Medical Care and None of His Prescription Medications for 8 days at Sunrise Hospital

Patient--150 is a veteran who went to Sunrise Hospital after a bad fall. Patient was ignored and mistreated. No diagnosis or treatment provided, so the patient signed out and went to the Veterans Hospital in his hometown. He was not given any paperwork. Patient says it was as if he had never been at Sunrise Hospital. The Veterans Hospital found the patient had a concussion and provided proper medical care and treatment.

Do not under any circumstances go to Sunrise Hospital.

Of the many hospitals I have been in over my lifetime, this one is absolutely the worst.

I was taken there by ambulance after a bad fall only to be ignored for two nights, an entire day and one half of another. I saw a doctor for a total of about 5 minutes the first day only for her to tell me she couldn't tell me anything because she didn't have the test results.

I was put in a room with a man who yelled and screamed all night while having the TV on at full blast.

After repeatedly begging to be moved, I was finally put in another room at 4:00 in the morning.

I finally saw another doctor the next day only after insisting that I had no idea what was wrong with me, what was being done to treat whatever it was, or what the results were of the tests I had been given.

Even at that, my wife had to intervene to get what little information there was.

When I left the hospital, they made me sign a release saying that I was leaving against their advice, even though the doctor had advised my wife that it was okay for me to leave.

When I did leave, they did not give me any paperwork covering my time in the hospital or information about my condition or treatment or any followup steps to take.

It was as if I had never even been there.

When I finally flew home in great distress, I went to my local Veteran's Administration Hospital emergency room. They admitted me right away, gave me a thorough examination, administered appropriate tests, diagnosed a severe concussion and determined a course of treatment all within 3 hours.

Most importantly the doctor listened, paid attention, kept me informed and took great care to put me at ease. The exact antithesis of what happened at Sunrise.

I am still terribly distressed by this whole ordeal. Sunrise is clearly the worst kind of for-profit hospital who's mission puts greed ahead of care.

Perhaps the most obvious lack of care was the bloody pillowcase. I laid on it the whole time that I was there. It was never changed. The wound continued to bleed because it was open, not bandaged.

When I asked if someone could clean off the wound, I was told they would get me a kit to do it myself. Even that never showed up.

The CEO of Sunrise Hospital's parent company, HCA Healthcare, is paid $23 million dollars a year to deliver this miserably, dangerously substandard healthcare. That in my experience is a tragedy.

Such egregious mismanagement is a public health hazard, posing risks to the community and to anyone unfortunate enough to get stuck there.
