Patient-289

No Medical Care and None of His Prescription Medications for 8 days at Sunrise Hospital

Patient-289 went to Sunrise Hospital with appendicitis. Long, slow process. Had a CT scan in the parking lot. Delayed care resulted in burst appendix. Agonizing pain. Was told she could take antibiotics and go home or wait for surgery. Patient had to wait 9 hours for surgery. Long wait times to receive pain medication. Given the wrong food multiple times. Sent the patient home without pain medication.

Went in for appendicitis.

I was pulled out of the waiting room for blood work and returned to the waiting room.

I was then pulled out of the waiting room for a CT scan that for some reason was in the parking lot, then I was returned to the waiting room.

I was told by a doctor that it was not going to burst and could even bypass surgery by taking antibiotics and going home.

I opted for the surgery.

I waited in the waiting room for another 6 hours, which eventually caused my appendix to fully burst.

I was in agonizing pain by the time my surgery was scheduled it was a full 9 hours from when I originally checked in.

Pain medication was consistently late. The only time I received it anywhere near on time is when I paged them ahead of time, and even then it was sometimes 2 hours late.

I was placed on the toilet and forgotten about.

I was also given the wrong food multiple times which could have jeopardized my recovery had I not been vigilant.

I was released the late afternoon of 4th of July, and there were no pharmacies open to collect my discharge meds, so I had to go my first night at home with absolutely nothing but some over-the-counter Tylenol.

It was misery.

Note to readers: Without surgery, the likelihood of someone surviving an appendicitis burst is quite low. If left untreated, peritonitis can be lethal.
