Patient-372

No Medical Care and None of His Prescription Medications for 8 days at Sunrise Hospital

Patient-372 died alone at Sunrise Hospital. The hospital did NOT contact her son, so he did not get to say goodbye to his mother. A friend brought the patient into the hospital and put their personal information on the paperwork. The patient had been to Sunrise Hospital multiple times in the past, and the records repeatedly and consistently show her son's information as her emergency contact. However, Sunrise Hospital did NOT bother to look at (or ignored) the emergency contact information in her records.

Her son posted the following comments:

I have a serious issue with the way this hospital chooses to contact family members of people who have been admitted to the Emergency Room.

My mother died at Sunrise Hospital, and they did NOT contact me.

The defended themselves by saying they had to go off of what was on the "face sheet."

What this means is --- my mother showed up unconscious, and a friend of hers filled out the form indicating who should be contacted.

I truly think this person did NOT even understand what "next of kin" meant.

She did NOT have anyone's phone numbers, so the hospital ended up having to reach out to people on Facebook --- just hoping they could reach somebody.

My mother had been to Sunrise Hospital on multiple occasions and had written my name and phone number as her emergency contact

My issue is that they did NOT even bother looking at that information (that was in her records multiple times) --- information that my mother had provided, NOT some stranger.

What is the point of indicating an emergency contact if that information is NEVER referenced in the future.

It's as if the information presented at the moment (by a stranger) superseded any previous form that was actually filled out by my mother.

If an emergency contact is on a form when I visit a hospital, that information should be referenced later, if necessary.

Apparently, that is not the case at Sunrise Hospital.

It seems like the only way this hospital would have known to contact me if if my number was tattooed on my mother's arm or written on a piece of paper in her pocket or something similar.

This is absurd!!!!

Because of the flawed procedures at this hospital, I did NOT get to say goodbye to my mother before she died.

They could NOT even be bothered to look through her file at a previous form which clearly indicated her emergency contact.

This has given me a lot of anxiety about ending up in the hospital, knowing that is is very likely my loved ones would never be contacted, despite having indicated information for my emergency contact on forms in the past.

I truly hope they change their processes so they use COMMON SENSE instead of hiding behind "procedure."
