Patient-306 went to Sunrise Hospital due to a stroke.

Here is the story told by the patient's wife:

My husband is a type-1 diabetic and was admitted to Sunrise Hospital for a stroke on July 23, 2023.

On the night of July 24, he was medically neglected by the night staff from 11:25 p.m. through 10:25 a.m. when they refused to give him insulin.

This action sent him into full-blown ketoacidosis.

He was vomiting and begging for insulin for 11 hours and was continually refused.

At 10:30 a.m., the morning staff apologized for the "miscommunication" and admitted him into the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) to save his life at that point.

I spoke with the following medical staff who apologized and admitted the error (which was the on-call Hospitalist and Endorcrinologist).

My husband's hospital roommate also witnessed him begging for insulin because he was over 500+ and feeling dizzy.

This is completely irresponsible on the night staff, and my husband suffered for 11 hours.

All he needed was insulin because he has type-1 diabetes.

I still can't believe this happened!!

I spoke with a Sunrise Hospital patient advocate on the day this happened, but I have not heard back from him since.

I want to make sure this incident is reported, and the night staff is held responsible for their medical neglect.

This needs to be fully investigated so no other patient suffers unnecessarily for simply needing a life-sustaining medication like insulin.

This hospital is absolutely sloppy and horrible!!

Complications of Ketoacidosis

Diabetes-related ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening complication that affects people with diabetes, including people who don’t know they have it.

If you don’t get quick treatment, DKA can lead to severe complications, including:

  • Very low potassium levels
  • Brain swelling
  • Fluid inside your lungs
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Damage to your kidneys and other organs
  • Coma
  • Death

Without treatment, DKA is fatal.
