Patient-335

No Medical Care and None of His Prescription Medications for 8 days at Sunrise Hospital

Patient-335 went to Sunrise Hospital. Nightmare experience. Elderly woman with a broken hip had to wait in the Emergency Room for 2 days before they finally moved her to a patient room. Numerous surgery delays, but the family was not kept informed. Very poor communication. Ridiculous security procedures. Long discharge process. The patient finally made it out of this nightmare hospital!!

What a nightmare this hospital was while my grandma was in there recovering!!!

She fell and broke her hip and needed to have surgery.

She was in the Emergency Room (ER) all day Sunday and Monday until early morning to be admitted and get a room.

My mom and I got to the ER around 7:30 p.m. .

As we walked in, I noticed a vile of blood on the ground by her bed. We told the ER nurse, Misty, and 10 minutes later, she comes in and says "Oh, that's been there since the morning shift." And she grabbed it and threw it away.

What?!? You mean to tell me that before my grandma got into this room you didn't think to pick up the vile of blood off the ground??

And my grandma was in that room since 4:30 p.m. when she was transported from another hospital.

She also got a CT scan and was waiting for the results.

When we arrived at 10:30 p.m., there were still no results and no doctor.

The ER nurse barely checked on her.

It was like we were shoved in the back at a restaurant and never got served.

At 5 a.m., she was moved to an actual room and was officially admitted into the hospital.

They said her results from the scan came back, and she needed surgery which was set for 1:30 p.m. (on Monday). No one informed the family that this was taking place. My grandma called us to let us know.

We decided to come in around 3 p.m. --- thinking she would be out of surgery by then so we could see her. She had been prepped and ready for surgery at 7 a.m.. When we arrived at 3 p.m., she was still in her room.

The nurse came in to take her vitals, and I asked why there was a delay. The nurse said, "The OR is backed up." I asked why, and she ignored me and walked out the door.

Since that nurse gave us no information, my mom walked up to the nurses' station and asked what was going on.

The nurse at the desk said, "Well, we are a trauma hospital, so those patients get seen first."

Okay, but that doesn't explain why my grandma has been waiting all day.

As we continued to wait, we reminded the nurse that my grandma is diabetic and has not eaten since Sunday morning.

Her surgery was delayed another two hours, so we asked to speak to the head nurse.

I swear these nurses have no common sense and do NOT know how to communicate to the patients or the family, let alone each other.

We should not have to ask for information and answers. They should be doing their jobs and informing the patients and the family --- especially if a surgery has been delayed for two days and the patient is diabetic and has not eaten.

Eventually, a nurse came in with sandwiches and said the surgery had been delayed again and is now set for tomorrow (Tuesday).

Rude nurses.

Now it's Tuesday, 3 days in the hospital. Her surgery finally happened at 10 a.m.

The CNA brought a warm blanket and compression socks. My grandma had been laying in bed for 3 days.

Now it's Wednesday, Discharge day. We finally got out of the room, but then they took my grandma downstairs to another work station where we waited to complete the discharge paperwork.

By 4 p.m., we were finally out of this nightmare hospital!!

The patient's family included these comments regarding the security process:

Because of the area this hospital is in (not a good area), you have to go through metal detectors and security before you can enter the hospital. Then they have you check in at the front desk to get your visitor pass. If you plan to see anybody upstairs (in a patient room), you need a doctor or nurse to badge you into the elevator which is the stupidest thing ever when we just went through two forms of security!!!
